How To Train Your Dog

There are nowadays many techniques and habits to teach you how to train a dog. You can find everywhere plenty of books, tv shows, websites videos and whatever you can think of, but you may be asking yourself: Which one is the best method of all???

The answer for this question is: Whatever method you choose!!! Yes, all of them can succed but the way you apply the process is the secret! And the best thing is: Anyone can do it!

There are some principles that are keys to success in training:

- Trust: The relationship with your dog should be based on trust. You must be his best friend, the same way as you want him to be with you. That's why there must be no punishment like yelling or hitting.

- Attention: Get the dog's attention: This is something that you have to do. When he is distracted, playing or doing something else, it is going to be hard for him to learn somenthing. So try to get his interest on you, on what is about to start (the training).

- Consistency: This is one of the most important things to do when training your pet. Always use the same language, same words, so he can get used to it. The physical commands should be used repetitively as well.

- Rewarding: Being fair and rewarding your dog is essential on his education. This way your dog is going to enjoy doing it.

Sometimes training can be boring or stressful for both you and the dog, and this may lead to frustration, but don't give up! Be patient and keep training! All the work will be worth it!

When Should I Start Training My Dog?

The best time to start with training is as soon as you get your new puppy! The sooner you start, the better your dog is going to respond to your comands through its life!

Puppies can start to be trained around 8 or 9 weeks old. At this age they are ready and eager to absorb information. As pack animals, they are waiting to receive orders from the pack leader; in this case, the leader is you! Training them in these months will not only help you and the dog coexist, it will also help when the dog reaches adolescence. Ideally, the same person should always train the puppy so then he does not get confused.

When the puppy has learned commands from the primary trainer, then the trainer will be able to teach the other members of the family to communicate with the dog in the correct ways. All puppies must learn the basic commands -- sit, stay, lie down and come. A well trained dog will be a good canine citizen and will be welcome in your family. A well behaved dog is the direct result of a good owner.

Why Train Your Dog?

The oldest domesticated species are the dogs. It was effectivelly adjusted to live with humans. The similarity between both species is significant, that is why dogs take the human familly as their own pack.

The dogs is going to treat you like a dog. He sees you as a member of the pack. The dominancy hierarchy is somenthing learned since they were born. They experienced the natural pack in the litter, and now that experience is transfered to the human family.Dogs need to be trained because of their strong instincts. These behavioral instructions they are born with may be in conflict with the humans behavior.

The purpose of training is so dogs and humans can live together in harmony.

Puppy Socialization

A dog's social life starts at about three weeks of age. By this time, it starts the communication with humans and other dogs.

The early lessons a puppy learns from its mother are vital for its normal development. He learns by watching its mother and brothers. And it's time to introduce to him some training too. Remember that rewarding your puppy its really important for his education.

Before you introduce him to the other dogs, it is important to take him to his first visit to the vet. He needs to get all the shots to prevent any kind of desease.

Go for short walks with the puppy and playtime in different environments. Try to do this exercise for about fifteen or twenty minutes a day at the beginning.

Housebreaking a Puppy

The best place to train your pet is on a natural surface like grass or dirt. The dog usually wants to relieve itself after a meal, or following play, exercise, excitement, or waking up. It usually starts to run or circle, sniffing the floor. When that happens, immediately take your dog outside. When your dog finishes his business, give praise.
If you don’t have the chance to go outside (for exemple, if you live in an apartment), you can apply the same principles. All you have to do is choose an area where is acceptable for your dog to relieve itself. When you thing that your dog wants to go ,lead it to designated area. After, give it a reward.
The dog can urinate as a sign of submission. It’s natural. If that happens, ignore it and walk away to the area that you choose. Encourage it to follow you and relieve itself.

Puppy Chewing

It’s very important to teach your puppy not to chew inappropriate things. The best way to keep your puppy from chewing is prevention and supervision, but if you do catch your puppy chewing on the remote control, don’t rush over and punish him physically for it, simply make a loud noise, so he drops it and then replace the remote control with something appropriate like a chew toy.

Another thing that works for chewing is chewing deterrents. There are certain products in the market that can make the remote control or eyeglasses taste really bad. Again, he tries the wrong thing and you give him the appropriate object to chew on.

It’s very important that the correction seems to come from the environment, you don’t want the correction to come from you because you became the element on the correction, and when you are not there he’ll go for it!
Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so chewing is completely normal behavior. We just need to teach them when, where and what to chew on!

Introducing a New Pet

Now that you’ve found the perfect pet it’s time to take it home and introduce the new puppy to your family.

Trust is the first thing you must establish with a new puppy. It needs to learn to trust the new environment you’ve brought him to. He can’t hurt anybody else, but he can hurt himself.
Your role with the puppy is to take over the role of pack leader from the mother, while still allowing the puppy to explore and process things on his own.

Now it's time to start the Puppy Training!!!
